Tallinn: Old versus New.
The other day I saw some old photos of Tallinn at [info]_zombakhan_'s (via [info]iggy2). I showed them to my dad in Estonia, and he decided to renew every single one of them. The angles may not match exactly, but you can still see that he did a great job.

Update: Majaka street revisited.

all the ugly buildings stayed, but the beautiful old houses are gone. A very sad story.

It's not all black and white. Some nice old buildings were in fact preserved. But yes, some glass-and-metal monsters emerged from nowhere.

I think there are some missmaches on Parnu Mnt. 1963: old part of the street is in Tondi not that what is pictured in 2005.
And with 1962, Vabaduse also looks to me not really the same part.

Vabaduse is the same place (notice the 3rd house from left on old pic), and Pärnu mnt 1963 is also the same (notice buildings on background), but I'm not very sure about Pärnu mnt 1962 myself, which I think could very well be taken near Tondi. Nevertheless, the fact remains - there's no more wooden houses near the tramways on Pärnu mnt :)

Really cool site. I like such photo comparison sites. But note that actually some 2005 pics look more Soviet than pics of 60`s. It means that they manage to build some ugly monsters and ruin the streetscape during Soviet time.

It's extremely interesting becouse I have seen this new version and it's great to compare..I wouldnt be able to imagine myself how it was 40 years ago.
Although I hate how Viru valjak looks right now - owful.
